IRC Guide
#1
So, with the recent addition of an IRC chat to ZEJ, I figured I would post this here so people don't start using the horrors that are Mibbit.

[b][i][u]Table of Contents:[/u][/i][/b]
Coming soon

[align=center][size=large][b][i][u]Chatzilla IRC[/u][/i][/b][/size][/align]

[b][i][u]Getting the program[/u][/i][/b]
Chatzilla is an add-on for Mozilla Firefox that can be found here. Just do what you normally do for add-ons, and to start it up, it'll be Tools > Chatzilla.

[b][i][u]Connecting to a Server/Channel:[/u][/i][/b]
The first step in Chatzilla is to set up a nick. Just click on the button to the left of the textbar, then click on "Change Nick." It is indeed that simple.

Anyway, now to connect to a server. I will be using ZEJ's IRC as an example for everything following, so if you want to go somehwere else, make sure you know everything about where the channel is located!

Now, to actually get started. First, in the textbox, you will need to type out the following command:
[code]/attach (server name)

Example using ZEJ:

/attach irc.badnik.net[/code]

Congratulations, you are now in the server, but you can't chat yet. In order to chat, you have to go to a channel. Channel names are preceded by the pound(#) sign, and never include spaces. In order to connect to a channel once in a server, use the following command:
[code]/join #(Channel name)

Example using ZEJ:

/join #ZEJ[/code]

Congratulations, you may now chat all you want!

[i][u]Setting up Auto-Connections:[/u][/i]

Setting up auto-connections in Chatzilla is very easy, and definitely comes in hand if you have bad memory like yours truly. To set them up, you must first establish connection with a(some) room(s). Once that is done, simply right click on any of the tabs, and click "Open this tab on startup")

And that's it. Congratulations, you now have at least one chat that opens when you start up Chatzilla.

[b][i][u]Registering and Identifying/Authenticating your nick:[/u][/i][/b]

In IRC, one very important feature is the ability to register your nick, which tells other people that try to use it that the nick is registered, and they must enter the password. It also prevents them from getting any sort of authority in chats with your nick, etc. To register your nick, make sure you are connected to at least a server, and type in the following command:

[code]/nickserv register [password] [email]

Using a random example:

/nickserv register thisisapassword email@host.com[/code]
(Note that neither of these are real, so you can try to use them in identifying(seen below), but they won't work unless you register them as such, which is just plain idiotic)

now that you have registered your nick, you must identify/authenticate yourself with each visit to the server, done by using the following code:

[code]/nickserv identify [password]

Using the previous example:

/nickserv identify thisisapassword[/code]

And that's all there is to the simple part of registering and identifying your nick.

[i][u]Auto-Identifying your nick:[/u][/i]
Auto-identifying your nick, while not as easy as auto-joining servers/channels, is really easy in Chatzilla. First of all, you are going to have to go into preferences(Chatzilla > Preferences...), and click on the SERVER(not channel!) that you want your nick to be auto-identified on. The next step is to go to the "lists" tab in the area that popped up when you clicked on the server. There, you will see a few textboxes. Near the first one is a button that says "add". Click it, and insert the following code:

[code]nickserv identify [password]

Example:

nickserv identify thisisapassword[/code]

and with that, you're done. Congratulations, your nick is now auto-identified on the server you chose! lather, rinse, and repeat for other servers.

[b][i][u]Getting your hands on IceChat[/u][/i][/b]

Visit http://www.icechat.net/ and look for a link similar to "Downloads", download the EXE and run, IceChat will then install itself.

[b][i][u]Connecting to Servers and Channels[/u][/i][/b]

Connecting to servers and channels with IceChat is very easy, and only requires one command for each. In this example, I will use Acanthite's server and channel.

[i][u]Server Connections[/u][/i]

This section will explain how to connect to a server, in this case, Acanthite's server, which is "sudo.kbfail.net".
Once you have IceChat open, type this into the message box:

[code]/server sudo.kbfail.net[/code]

That's it! There's no need for ports because IceChat finds the connection port automatically.

[i][u]Joining Channels[/u][/i]

Equally as simple as connecting to servers, there's joining channels. However, unlike ChatZilla, you do NOT need to type the pound symbol (#) -- IceChat assumes it is there based on the server's CHANTYPE setting.
Here is how to join a channel, using Acanthite as an example:

[code]/join acanthite[/code]

Obviously if you want to connect to different servers or channels, you would substitute the information given here with your own.

[b][i][u]Auto-connecting to Servers and Channels[/u][/i][/b]

[i][u]Servers[/u][/i]

To auto-connect to servers, make sure you're connected to one first, then open the Server Editor (toolbar button that looks like a globe with a computer in front of it), and in the list of sections, click Startup. Whst you do after that is tick "Auto-connect on IceChat Startup". Just hit save and you're done!

[i][u]Channels[/u][/i]

Autojoining a channel works similarly to auto-connecting to a server. To set up an auto-join, open the Server Editor, click Auto-Join List. then look above the list for a textbox, and type the name of the channel you wish to autojoin in there, click the add button and save. You're done!

[b][i][u]Auto-Identification and Registering[/u][/i][/b]

[i][u]Registering[/u][/i]

In IRC, one very important feature is the ability to register your nick, which tells other people that try to use it that the nick is registered, and they must enter the password. It also prevents them from getting any sort of authority in chats with your nick, etc. To register your nick, make sure you are connected to at least a server, and type in the following command:

[code]/nickserv register [password] [email]

Using a random example:

/nickserv register thisisapassword email@host.com[/code]
(Note that neither of these are real, so you can try to use them in identifying(seen below), but they won't work unless you register them as such, which is just plain idiotic)

(thank you, Nate!)

[i][u]Auto-Identification[/u][/i]

To auto-identify, first you need to know how to identify. This is explained below:

In the textbox at the bottom of the main window, type:
[code]/nickserv identify [password][/code]
Replacing [password] with the registered password for your nick.

Now, on to auto-identifying, which is accomplished by opening the Server Editor, clicking on AutoPerform, ticking "Enable AutoPerform List" and typing something like (using Acanthite Chat as an example again):

[code]/nickserv identify [password][/code]

Into the textarea, replacing the example information with your own registered one and hitting Save.

[align=center][size=large][b][i][u]Default Opera IRC:[/u][/i][/b][/size][/align]

[b][i][u]Getting the Program[/u][/i][/b]
It comes with the Opera browser. If you can't get this far, then you have no hope with Opera.

[b][i][u]Connecting to a Server/Channel:[/u][/i][/b]
The first thing you want to do is to connect to a server. Connecting to a server is decidedly harder with Opera IRC than with Chatzilla. First, you must hit the Menu button, go down to "Chat", then click on "List Rooms." Once the window has popped up, you will notice that it already has the server "irc.badnik.net," which is good if you want to connect to a room on that server. Unfortunately, there are many IRC servers, so to connect to a different one, click on the "Account" button, then the "new account" button.

In the new window that pops up, do anything you want for the first two times, but the third time, you'll want to change the thing in the textbox to the server you want to connect to.

Using Acanthite as an example:
[code]sudo.kbfail.net[/code]

And now you are connected to a server.

Connecting with a channel is much simpler and easier. To do so, click on the menu for Opera again, and go down to chat. This time, however, you will want to click on the "join chat" option. In the window that comes up, you will want to make sure that it is going to connect with the correct server. To maker sure, simply click on the down arrow there and click the server you want in the following drop-down menu. Then, type out the name of the channel you want to connect to. In Acanthite's case, this would be #Acanthite.

[i][u]"Autoconnecting" to channels:[/u][/i]
There is no true way to autoconnect to channels with Opera IRC. However, autoconnection can be emulated by pinning the IRC tab that you wish to autoconnect to, and connect to it manually when it comes up. Sorry, but this is the only way.

[b][i][u]Registering and Identifying your nick:[/u][/i][/b]
Registering and identifying your nick is done the same exact way as Chatzilla. Same commands and everything. The only thing is, is that there is no way to auto-identify.
